The Caribbean or the Antilles are a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea east of Central America between North America and above South America. The area was once conquered by Amerindians called the Tainos and the Caribs. Both tribes come from South America and claimed chiefdoms until Spanish conquest. The Spaniards pretty much conquered most of the Caribbean before being disowned by France, Britain and the US, or decolonized and becoming independent states. Other minor colonial powers in the Caribbean include the Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark. However, the Dutch West Indies were handed over to the British, the Danish Antilles became the US Virgin Islands.
