The Romans were ancient people that resided in present-day Italy. Roman people were likely descendants of Greeks, Latins and Etruscans. Just like present-day Italy, its capital was Rome and it first started out as a republic, a democratic country where citizens can elect their leader, or president. After the dictator, Julius Caesar, rose to power and was assassinated by the Roman senate, the Romans had a great empire under his nephew and adopted son, Octavian, whom was later named Augustus. It stretched out to most of Western Europe and England, Mediterranean Asia and Africa. At the time before Diocletian accepted Christianity, one of the three abrahamic monotheistic religions that followed the teachings of Jesus, many of them we're persecuted killed. But the religion has decreased military loyalty to fight the invading barbarians from Germania (Germany). Other problems included inflation and poverty. Later on, the emperor Constantine broke up the empire in two. It was unified once more, before breaking up again. The Germanic tribes ended up destroying the Western Roman Empire, and establishing kingdoms in the former Roman provinces in 400AD. The Eastern side survives as the Byzantine Empire until the early first millennium when the Ottoman Turks invaded. The Germanic kingdoms mixed their languages with Latin, the language spoken by the Romans, and adopted Roman Catholicism.
