As an actor, he first appeared on the hit Friday night comedy gag show NiteClub in 1985, and rose to fame when he landed the role of Extortionist Ieronim Antonovich in the long-running police-procedural series The Interceptors in 1987. Umalin was also known for his on-screen tag-team partnership or "bromance" with fellow actor and comedian Mstislav Enerkov, which started as a segment in NiteClub called "Gregoriy and Mstislav" in 1989.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Gregoriy Umalin was born in Sambanapova, Sta. Susana on 24 August 1964 to former Senator Dmitri Umalin (16 April 1927 - 27 January 1997) and former actress Adriyana Lumanova (15 March 1938 - 26 August 1975). Gregoriy has three brothers, Andrey (born 12 August 1957), Ustin (born 12 January 1959) and Mark (born 18 June 1962), and three sisters, Aleksandra (born 19 September 1967), Yuliya (born 4 June 1970), and Raisa (24 October 1973 - 5 May 1994). Gregoriy attended University of Sta. Susana and finished two degrees: film, which he finished in 1986, and political science, which he finished in 1990.

Personal Life[]
From 1984 to 1986, Umalin was in a relationship with actress and eventually The Interceptors co-star Mara Shchpalova. In February 1985, 20-year-old Umalin met 23-year-old The Interceptors stuntwoman Katrina Tarapova at an after-party for the conclusion of the show's fifteenth season. Umalin, at the time an up-and-comer who had only been in a few episodes of NiteClub, was invited by co-star Yulian Markovsky, who was also the executive producer of The Interceptors. Umalin and Tarapova started dating in 1987, around the time Umalin became part of the main cast in The Interceptors. The relationship was immediately clouded by controversy, mainly due to the fact that they started dating only six months after Tarapova's first husband, Frisbee lead guitarist/vocalist Iriney Kuznetsov, died in a car accident on December 1986. The rumors went from Tarapova cheating on Kuznetsov with Umalin for months before Kuznetsov died, to as far as the theory that Kuznetsov's "car accident" was actually staged by Umalin and Tarapova. Amidst the rumors, the two became engaged in June 1988 after one year of dating, and married in December of the same year.
In addition to Umalin becoming a step-father to Semyon (born January 21, 1983) and Samara Kuznetsova (born August 15, 1985), Tarapova's children with Kuznetsov, the couple had six children of their own: Vladimir (born March 13, 1990), Mikhail (born October 19, 1992), Borislav (January 11 - December 26, 1994), Yelizaveta (born November 8, 1995), Andrey (born March 6, 2003), and Sara (born May 12, 2005). Borislav was one of the casualties of the Margovyan Airlines Flight 4892 on December 26, 1994 at the age of only eleven months old. Vladimir grew up to be a politician in Sta. Susana (currently serving as Mayor), and Mikhail became an actor and comedian, eventually becoming a regular in NiteClub alongside his father. Yelizaveta is currently studying to become a pilot, while Andrey and Sara are vlogging, having started their YouTube channel "The Umalin Babies" in 2015.
